National Bank to host prestigious IARIW General Conference in 2026

The National Bank of Belgium will host the next General Conference of the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW), from 24 to 28 August 2026 in Brussels. The announcement was made at the most recent edition of the biennial conference, held this year in London.

The National Bank of Belgium has long been a leading member of the IARIW. Some 300 delegates from 40 countries traditionally attend the association’s biennial General Conference which, this year, was organised in London. Around half the delegates come from national statistical services, with the other half hailing from universities, international organisations and research institutes. The 2026 conference will be the 39th edition.

About the IARIW

Since its foundation in 1947, the IARIW has aimed to advance knowledge about income and wealth by organising conferences, circulating accessible academic papers, and publishing a quarterly journal. The association is principally focused on issues concerning:

  • the definition, measurement and analysis of national income and wealth as well as poverty;
  • the development of systems of economic and social accounting and their use for economic policy; and
  • international comparisons.

Roeland Beerten (Head of General Statistics at the NBB): “We are delighted that the National Bank will be hosting the next conference. As discussions at the 2024 conference in London showed, there are many emerging issues around measuring the current and future economy, such as integrating welfare and environmental aspects. At the NBB, we are also looking at these challenges and how to address them in our statistical work.”
