Pierre Wunsch starts work as 23rd Governor of the National Bank
Pierre Wunsch has this week taken over the reins from Jan Smets at the helm of the National Bank. He is the 23rd Governor in the history of Belgium’s central bank.
Brussels-based Pierre Wunsch (aged 51) holds a Doctorate in Economics (UCL) and a Master’s degree in Public & International Affairs (Princeton University). Following a career in industry with Tractebel EGI/Electrabel and a few years as head of cabinet to the Minister of Finance, he started work as a Director at the National Bank in June 2011. He held the post of Vice-Governor from 2015. Mr Wunsch has gained a wealth of experience in prudential supervision of banks & insurance companies, monetary policy, recovery and resolution, public finances and the internal machinery of the NBB. Over the last few years, he has therefore had a chance to prepare himself well for his new role as 23rd Governor of the National Bank.
Pierre Wunsch replaces Jan Smets, who was 67 yesterday and thus reached the age limit fort his position. Mr Smets, who from now on holds the title of Honorary Governor, leaves the National Bank after a brilliant career spanning 45 years. The Bank is very grateful to Jan Smets for his dedicated commitment and high degree of professionalism over all these years.
